While no ranking system is perfect, we
do believe that our system (aka 'work in progress') offers a methodology
that is straightforward and forthright, minus the politics and the
popularity contests.
Each team
is eligible for points for one tournament a month. If a team plays
in more than one tournament a month, their top finish will be used
to determine a team's total points. There will be no credit for
extra tournaments played. NOTE: Tournaments that begin at the end
of a month and conclude at the beginning of a month (e.g. A three day
tournament that begins on November 29 and ends December 1) will
be credited to the month in which that tournament concluded. The
above example would mean the points would be considered for December,
not November.
Teams participating
in tournaments where there are less than four teams competing in
their division will not be eligible for points for that particular
tournament.
Each team
is eligible for points for up to ten tournaments a year including National Championships. If a
team plays in more than ten tournaments in a year, their top ten
finishes will be used to determine a team's total points. Those
ten tournaments must have been played in ten different months except for a national tournament which may be included in the same month as another tournament.
If a team competes in an older division in a particular tournament and earns points, those points will follow the team back down to their normal age division.
Points are earned for 1st through
4th place finishes in nationally sanctioned tournaments. Currently
the following sanctioning bodies recognized by FLBN are:
AAU
- Amateur Athletic Union
CABA - Continental Amateur Baseball Association
SSBA - Super Series Baseball of America
TCS - Triple Crown Sports
USSSA - Unites States Specialty Sports Association

1 bonus point is awarded each time a team finishes 1st in a lower

6 bonus points are awarded

5 bonus points are awarded each time a team finishes 1st in a

4 bonus points are awarded each time a team finishes 1st in a
lower division national championship
NEW: If a team competes in an upper age division tournament and places, the following extra points will be awarded: 2 bonus points for a 1st place finish. 1 bonus point for a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th place finish. This will be in addition to the regular points and bonus points that team may earn for their finish.
The 9U division will receive Upper Division points unless there are two divisions offered in a tournament. This is due to the low number of tournaments offered throughout the year as well as the small number of 9U teams competing. Note also new in 2007/2008, tournaments where three or more 9U teams compete will be eligible for middle of the road points, again for the same reasons as described above.
Points are
tallied after each sanctioned tournament. The team with the most
accumulated points will be ranked 1st in the state.
All tournament
finishes are submitted to FLBN by the sanctioning bodies. Any discrepancies
with finishes should be directed to the tournament organization
and not to FLBN. Out of state teams are not listed in our ranking
system. Points earned by an out of state team are taken out of the
formula. They are not awarded to the next Florida team in line (e.g.
If your team finishes 3rd while an out of state finishes 2nd, you
will still be awarded third place finish points).
If a team participates in an
out of state tournament and finishes in the top four of their division,
they are eligible to receive points provided the team submits to
FLBN a website link where FLBN may verify the tournament results.
They are also eligible to receive bonus points for 1st place finishes.
Tournaments that are organized, operated and run by 'Invitation Only' (see definition below) - Tournament finishers will be awarded points equivalent to the AAA Lower Division Points System.
DEFINITION: By 'Invitation Only' we do not mean normal First Come First Served limitations by which many of our state tournaments fill up and sell out. We also do not mean invitational tournaments by which a team must qualify to be eligible. 'Invitation Only' is defined here as an organization choosing to make a tournament known only to a limited number of teams and filling up and running a tournament that way.
Tournaments that are organized, operated and run by Open Entry but can provide only one division - Tournament finishers will be awarded points equivalent to the mid-level ranking, even though their sanctioning body might offer both divisions. FLBN is not bound nor obligated to a national organization's system of ranking.
The Upper Division Points System will awarded only in an open format, whereby a tournament offers top level competition for any team wishing to participate and where two distinct divisions are offered and played in that tournament.
FLBN's commitment is always to act on behalf of all teams involved in Florida travel team competition.
In special situations where all teams compete in pool play and the top two seeds play for the upper division while the rest play in the lower division, those two teams in the upper division will be awarded 'middle of the road' points for their success.
The ranking calendar is August 1 through July 31. National tournaments that carry over will be considered as a tournament held prior to July 31 provided teams play in that age division.
Other sanctioning
bodies may petition FLBN for consideration at any time. FLBN does
not use non-sanctioned, irregularly sanctioned or independent tournaments
in its ranking process.
If a team disbands, FLBN must
be notified by the manager. Once verified, that team shall be removed
from the formula.
